I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to hear him play dozens of times. He was a major talent (who reminded me a bit of my friend Willie Aron who is also a multi instrument threat and plays a mean keyboard and bit of accordion too).
When it was announced that Danny was taking a leave from the current tour because of his illness, I joined many other fans in donating to The Melanoma Research Foundation. On the official Bruce Springsteen website, there is a notice that a specific web link for donations in lieu of flowers will be set up.
Here are links to Backstreets.com, the AP and E! News.
My thoughts and prayers are with Danny's family, musical blood brothers and sisters, and fans.

C'mon Get Happy! - The Partridge Family
It's New Year's Day and I'm not making resolutions. I'm also not making goals. I looked back on the last set of New Year's goals I wrote two years ago and I achieved only one. It was important. The rest weren't achieved because my priorities and perspectives shifted throughout the years. Life happens, things change.
Last year I started trying the practice of choosing a word to focus on and to provide a theme and touchstone throughout the year. Christine Kane has a fabulous explanation of this practice. Unsurprisingly (if you know me) I couldn't choose just one word. So last year I had three:
- Effortlessness defined as "in its own perfect time" and which requires trust
- Fearless which equals love
- Authentic which requires honesty
2007 was in some ways was a very difficult year for me, chief among which was because of the death of my dog Zoe. However, I begin 2008 with nothing but love for my life in 2007. I learned much and transformed my life in some subtle ways and have realized that I am happy.
For those who had a notion, a notion deep inside/that it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive - Bruce Springsteen "Badlands"
However that's not to say that I have nothing left to learn or ways in which to grow or that my life cannot continue to improve. So for 2008 I'm choosing a new theme and focus (without leaving behind my words for 2007, rather seeing them as more fully incorporated).
About a month ago I started the Complaint Free World Challenge and I'll continue until I reach 21 days free of complaints, criticisms and gossip.
I also learned something about myself because I opened myself up to hearing an important message. Although I'm pretty good at living life I have a tendency to stop and look back and get stuck analyzing and examining the past. The analogy was presented to me as climbing a ladder and when I look up and climb (towards God, towards my highest and best self, towards the future) that ladder is golden. So in 2008 my theme will be to "keep climbing" and living my life like it's golden...
Oh, and tickets for the 2008 leg of the Springsteen tour and hopefully Danny Federici will be well enough to rejoin.
Also in my post is a suggestion to discover Phil Roy who is my favorite music discovery of the past several years. Issues + Options is my suggestion for where to start listening.
Dancing With The Stars announced their new cast. Last time Joey Fatone was my pick from the start and he came in second so not bad. This time nobody in particular is tickling my supportive fancy but I find the choice of billionaire blogger Mark Cuban fascinating. I'll probably enjoy Cameron Mathison and Wayne Newton no doubt will be wacky fun. My favorite pro, Tony Dovolani is paired with Jane Seymour so he'll be out early on again since the older women don't seem to fare well on this show.
And, MTV has a "poet laureate." No, not R. Kelly [“Not only is there a man in this cabinet/But the man is a midget! (Midget! Midget! Midget!)” ] but an actual poet:
It is John Ashbery, the prolific 80-year-old poet and frequent award winner known for his dense, postmodern style and playful language. One of the most celebrated living poets, Mr. Ashbery has won MacArthur Foundation and Guggenheim fellowships and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1976 for his collection “Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror.”
What song gives you the most holiday cheer?
Submitted by Roxy.
"God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is my favorite traditional Christmas carol because it's got a peppy tempo and a mix of comforting and slightly scary lyrics. I also heard a gospel version of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" recently which put me into the holiday mood instantly.
"Santa Claus is Coming to Town" by Bruce Springsteen because it's Bruce and he's loose and having fun with it.
And, I must confess, that "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey has replaced "Santa Baby" as my holiday guilty pleasure, secretly sing along to in the car, always puts a smile on my face even though it really has nothing to do with Christmas, song.
